About me - Leonie Rose Mary
I'm a mum of 5 young children, and we home educate. Those two little cuties are my twins!
My first three children were freeborn with just my husband present at home, and our twins were a total surprise, born by c-section in hospital. Two of my pregnancies have been 'wild', i.e. I've not opted in for medical care, and the others I've opted in for select care. I have learned so much from each experience over the past 10 years.
My personal journey has been one of self-discovery and deepening in to trust and surrender; of myself, my body, my babies, my husband, and to God. My faith forms the foundation for my life.
My husband is a carpenter and wood turner, and he makes some gorgeous pieces - birthy and non-birthy. You can see his Cord Burning bits on this site. They're stunning!
I enjoy spending time in nature, finding the calm in the inevitable storms, creative expression, cooking and baking for my loved ones, geeking out on birth, and sitting in quiet contemplation. I'm learning to love and appreciate the simple things!
What brings me to birth?
Since becoming pregnant with my eldest in 2015, I have been immersing myself in all things birth, babies and healing. Shedding a diagnosis of Fibromyalgia was pivotal.
Since then, after experiencing an incredibly powerful and healing first birth, I knew that the messages we're taught - particularly as women - is just not what birth is about. We are taught to fear this power and rite of passage from a very young age, as well as to ignore the inner voice that guides us to safety.
I am committed to the path of deep remembering through birth; to support more families to dig deep and rediscover hidden parts of themselves.
I am walking a fine line between speaking the truth about the current birthing climate in the UK, and not scaring women. If only it were as simple as just having a baby! I believe that knowledge is power, and we all deserve to know the truth.
I believe that babies remember and communicate their births, and that the way we are born matters and stays with us. I feel birth to be medicine and a profound time in life.
Remembering my own birth, and my 2nd son telling me about his, have been life-changing conversations. I am here to connect with your baby too.
And yes, that is a print made from my 3rd son's placenta!
Homebirth and freebirth
Increasingly, families are choosing to walk away from mainstream care. Birth without the presence of a medical professional is called 'freebirth', and it is on the rise.
Women choose freebirth for different reason; maybe because they want to avoid repeating a previous traumatic birth experience; maybe because they simply feel that birth is not a medical procedure; or maybe because they know that to birth in their power and strength will be an incredibly healing and powerful experience, for them and their baby.
You may have heard freebirth being spoken about in various news articles, and typical of mainstream press, it is widely misunderstood and misrepresented. A really good place to learn about freebirth is to speak to women and families who have made this choice.
Often women that I speak to will be planning a home birth, and they are preparing for a freebirth 'just in case'. Or else they've been told right at the last minute that a midwife won't be available to support their home birth. Or else they are wanting to birth at home and just want a simple, non-medicalised birth. I'm here for it!
As a doula who specialises in homebirth and freebirth, my role is to hold space for you as you figure out what is right for you and your family. I will never tell you what to do. I will help you tease out some really big questions, work through some (common) fears, and dig deep in to why you want to make this choice. I support you as your prepare in the ways that feel right for you, and as you take full responsibility for the choices you are making.
